Some Boko Haram members seek Christ
Amid Boko Haram's deadly guerilla war against Nigerians, some disillusioned members of the radical Islamic uprising are exploring Christianity, a missionary group says.
"They're asking a lot of questions: Why is Allah not fighting for himself? Why is Allah sending these young people to go and die? Must we die like that before he gives us life?" said the director of a native Nigerian Christian organization active in the country's violent northeast, according to U.S.-based Christian Aid Mission. The organization says it has supported its Nigerian partner for 28 years.
The Nigerian Christian group is working in refugee camps, providing direct medical and food aid, and sharing the Gospel. Former Boko Haram members are withdrawn to distant locations to put them out of reach of the insurgency, Christian Aid Mission said.
Dubai: free to worship, but not convert
In Dubai Christians are free to worship but must not try to convert anyone, reports the BBC. Churches cannot display crosses, and those who preach publicly or try to persuade Muslims to convert can expect jail and deportation.
The UAE, of which Dubai is a part, has crippling restrictions on freedom of speech, the report says. “There's widespread media censorship and dozens of activists are in jail. But it also has a little-known history of religious tolerance” says the BBC’s Matthew Teller.
In 1966, the year oil was discovered in Dubai, Sheikh Rashid donated a pocket of land to a Roman Catholic mission. The city has since grown up around it, and St Mary's now stands beside a busy four-lane road in central Dubai.
Father Lennie Connully says the church receives "7,000 for Friday Mass" (main church services in Muslim countries are usually held on Fridays, for most the one non-work day of the week), which is held in many different languages. Thousands also attend different language services at the nearby Protestant Holy Trinity Church.
IS turns ancient Mosul church into mosque
Islamic State has turned an ancient Chaldean church in Mosul, Iraq into a mosque, according to Fides.
St Joseph church, which is considered to be one the oldest churches of the Chaldean denomination and overlooks the Tigris river, has been turned into the Abi Abd El-Rahman Elbilawi mosque, named after a leading figure in IS.
IS has removed crosses from the church, painted its dome black and already used it for prayers during Ramadan. St Joseph's is the second church in Mosul to be turned into a mosque, after St Ephrem.
Hassake church bells ring out ‘break-fast’
Sources in the northern Syrian city of Hassake have told theAnkawa news agency that church bells have started to sound the time when fasting Muslims can start eating - as the sun sets - because many mosques have no electricity due to fighting between the Syrian Army and Islamist rebels.
Some parts of the city are witnessing fierce battles between the Syrian Army and IS, which tried to invade at the end of June; aircraft shells caused great destruction in the west and south of Hassake.
Ankawa.com sources confirmed many parts of Hassake have no power.
